Black Women Had a Big Night at the 2022 Emmy Awards!

If you had a chance to watch the Emmy Awards show on Monday night, you'd know that Black women really stole the show for television's biggest night! Zendaya, Lizzo, Quinta Brunson and Sheryl Lee Ralph all dominated the 2022 Emmys, making it a major moment for Black women in Hollywood.

Sheryl Lee Ralph, a veteran Hollywood actress, took home the award for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for her portrayal of Barbara Howard in ABC's hit sitcom Abbott Elementary. She was followed by Lizzo who took home the award for Best Competition Series for her Prime Video series Lizzo's Watch Out for the Big Grrrls.

Zendaya received her second Emmy award later that evening for her lead performance in the HBO drama Euphoria. She received her first Emmy in 2020 for the same lauded role.

Quinta Brunson, the star and creator of Abbott Elementary, also had a special night. For the pilot episode of the show, the actress won her first-ever Emmy for Best Writing for a Comedy Series.

These wins, according to Adrien Sebro, an assistant professor of media studies at the University of Texas at Austin aren’t just noteworthy for Black people in entertainment but are also key for advancement in the industry.

"With the success of these shows, it opens the reality to networks that Black women and Blackness is marketable,” Serbo said. “This will lead the way to more Black writers, more Black actresses on writers, sitcoms, reality series and competition series, as well. This leads to more spaces of Black creative possibility.
